SHC won a war with Xavier 3-2 on Saturday

The Spring Hill College volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to pull off a 3-2 win over unranked Xavier University (La.) by the scores of (25-14, 19-25, 19-25, 26-24, 15-6) in the34th annual NAIA National Championship Tournament Opening Round at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.

The opening set saw the Badgers build a quick 6-2 lead over Xavier (26-8), but the Gold Nuggets rallied to cut it to an 8-7 SHC lead. A 6-1 run by the home team made it 13-8 contest before SHC built a 22-11 cushion and earned a 25-14 victory.

Much like the first set, the second set saw SHC take a 4-1 early lead before Xavier re-grouped to take a 5-4 lead that grew to 9-7 until the Badgers fought back for a 10-9 lead. From there, the teams traded leads four times until Xavier took a 19-16 lead as SHC head coach Dr. Peggy Martin called a timeout to refocus her troops. The Gold Nuggets refused to die, however, and continued to roll up a 22-17 bulge en route to a 25-19 win and knotting the match at 1-1.

Xavier earned a 16-11 cushion midway through the third set when SHC cut it to a 15-16 deficit only to see the Nuggets rebuild a 21-15 lead and a take second 25-19 win to take a 2-1 lead in sets.

SHC grabbed a 3-0 lead, but Xavier once again took a 13-8 lead in the fourth set. The Badgers rallied late to tie the set 20-20, but Xavier elbowed to a 22-20 advantage. The Badgers then rolled off three points capped by a block by junior Megan Haber to steal a 23-22 margin, but the Nuggets sent it to extra rallies with a 24-24 tie. SHC rattled off the winning points to tie the match at 2-2.

In the deciding set, Spring Hill led 2-0 until Xavier tied it at 5-5. The Badgers held an 8-5 advantage at the swap over and built out a 10-6 lead and closed the match at 15-6.

Spring Hill was paced on offense by Haber with 20 kills, senior Sha Sha Buchanan with 14 kills and freshman Madison Seuzeneau with 10 kills. Senior Taryn Nash distributed 48 kills while senior libero Meredith Donald scooped up 34 digs with 32 receptions.

Xavier saw Chinedu Echebelem get 20 kills while Franziska Pirkl gave out 44 assists and Taylor Reuther had 25 digs with 25 receptions.

Spring Hill hit for a .129 (57-34-178) average with three aces and eight total blocks as Xavier hit for a .087 (52-36-184) average with one ace and 12 total blocks.

The Badgers last advanced to the NAIA Championship's Final Site in 2011 when they earned a 1-2 record in pool play. SHC now holds a 3-7 record in the NAIA National Championship Tournament in four appearances.
