The Spring Hill College men's basketball team lost a 91-41 exhibition game decision to the University of South Alabama (USA) Jaguars on Monday night at the USA Mitchell Center.
USA (5-3) grabbed a quick 12-2 lead just 3½ minutes into the game before SHC mounted a five-point run to climb back to within 12-7 at 13:23, but a 17-point run by the Jaguars to 29-9 effectively decided the contest with eight minutes remaining in the 1st half.
South led by a 21-point 44-23 margin at the break and by as much as 48 points at 85-37 with 4½ minutes left on the clock.
Junior forward Frederick Gatson scored eight points with seven rebounds to lead the Badgers in both categories as the Badgers shot 30.6% (15-49) from the floor and just 11.8% (2-17) in 3-point attempts.
Augustine Rubit scored 18 points with nine rebounds to pace the Jags who out-rebounded SHC by a 55-24 margin. USA shot an even 50% (34-68) overall including 37.5% (9-24) from behind the arc and stole the ball nine times to force 14 total turnovers by the Badgers. SHC took the ball away twice as South lost the ball a total of nine times.
The Badgers (0-6) will now host non-conference foe and future Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) rival Stillman College (2-3) on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
