TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Stillman College women's basketball team avenged last Friday's 77-68 loss to the Spring Hill College Badgers with a 72-61 non-conference victory over SHC at Birthright Alumni Hall on Saturday evening.
The Lady Tigers (4-6) held a slim 19-17 lead over the Badgers with five minutes to play in the 1st half and maintained that same two-point lead at 28-26 at the intermission. Spring Hill rallied to take a 3-point advantage at the 16:23 mark of the 2nd half, but a 6-0 run by Stillman gave the Lady Tigers a 40-37 lead with 13:51 showing on the clock.
SHC held a 44-42 lead with 11:47, but Stillman launched what proved to be a decisive 12-point run over the next two minutes to build out a commanding 54-44 cushion with just eight minutes left to play. Spring Hill would whittle the deficit down to seven points, but could draw no closer as Stillman took the 72-61 win.
Junior guard Elissa VandeWaa led Spring Hill with 16 points while senior forward Sha Sha Buchanan returned to the squad after volleyball season to contribute 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. SHC shot just 20% (15-75) from the floor and 25% (6-24) from long distance while suffering 14 turnovers in the face of six steals by Stillman.
The Tigers shot 34.6% (28-81) overall including 19.2% (5-26) in 3-point attempts. Stillman turned the ball over 10 times as SHC took away five steals and Spring Hill out-rebounded the Tigers 65 to 56 under the baskets.
The Badgers (3-6) will next host the Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) Lady Knights (5-2) in a non-conference affair at the the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
