MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Spring Hill College men's basketball team suffered a 76-58 loss at SSAC rival Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) on Friday night at the AUM Physical Education Complex.
The Warhawks (5-8, 2-3 SSAC East) jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first 3½ minutes of play and held a 17-6 advantage with 12 minutes to play in the 1st period.
By the six minute mark, SHC trailed by 19 points at 29-10, but rallied to cut the deficit down to 29-16 as senior guard Ty McCants began to find the basket for the Badgers.
Trailing 36-24 at the intermission, Spring Hill handed the ball to sophomore guard Jackson Fos who knocked down three consecutive 3-point baskets to draw the Badgers back within seven points at 45-38 with 13:43 to play.
Over the next five minutes AUM re-established its momentum and rebuilt a 20-point bulge at 62-42 with just eight minutes remaining on the game clock.
Junior guard Robert Drummond paced the SHC effort with 14 points and Foss added another 11 points as the Badgers shot 33.9% (20-59) from the floor including a 26.3% (5-19) effort from 3-point distance. SHC won the rebounding battle 43 to 38, but suffered 19 turnovers against 11 AUM steals.
AUM's Brandon Howard tallied 18 points and Brett Person contributed another 13 points for the Warhawks with Jon Taylor coming off the bench for 10 points. AUM shot a scorching 44.6% (25-56) and 42.1% (8-19) in 3-point attempts. The home team lost 11 turnovers in face of six Badger steals.
The Badgers (1-12, 0-4 SSAC West) will host the 25th-ranked Faulkner University Eagles (9-6, 3-2 SSAC East) on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
