NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Spring Hill College men's basketball team accepted their eighth single digit loss of the season on Monday night as the 24th-ranked Xavier University (La.) Gold Rush earned a hard-fought 65-59 victory in a non-conference game at the Convocation Center.

The Gold Rush (14-4) and the Badgers fought a see-saw battle over the early going with neither team taking more than a two-point lead until a put-back bucket by Xavier's Wesley Pluviose-Philip gave the home team a 10-7 advantage at 12:44.

Spring Hill answered with back-to-back 3-point baskets by senior center Ty McCants and freshman center Dejan Stefanovic to take a 13-10 lead. Two minutes later sophomore guard Ben Redman converted on an old-fashioned 3-point play with a driving layup and a successful free throw to maintain a 16-14 Badger bulge.

The 3-point Badger parade continued when McCants and sophomore guard Jackson Fos connected on consecutive treys to make it 26-24 in favor of Spring Hill with 4:15 to play in the half.

Anthony Goode of Xavier would stake the Gold Rush to a 31-28 lead at halftime with a 3-pointer of his own at the 1:20 mark, but a tap in by junior forward Frederick Gatson and a bucket by sophomore guard Jarrett Calhoun gave the Badgers back the lead just one minute into the 2nd period.

An 8-0 Xavier run posted the Gold Rush to a 41-36 lead with 12 minutes on the clock, but senior forward Alex Looney responded to the challenge with a 3-pointer and a layup as SHC cut the deficit down to 46-45. Fos then tied the game at 48 with yet another trey at 6:05.

Two Badger turnovers led to four Xavier points on the other end as the Gold Rush took a 57-52 lead with three minutes to play. Trailing by six points, Calhoun would keep SHC in the game with a 3-point basket at 27 seconds remaining to make it 62-59.

Fos had a 3-point attempt partially blocked with 8 seconds on the clock as Goode made 3-of-4 free throws over the final 20 seconds to secure the win for the Gold Rush.

Fos led the Badgers for the second consecutive game by scoring 12 points and Calhoun contributed 11 more points as SHC shot 46.7% (21-45) from the floor including 45% (9-20) from 3-point range. Spring Hill lost 16 turnovers versus seven steals by the Gold Rush as the Badgers were also out-rebounded by a 32 to 23 margin.

Anthony Goode dropped in a game-high 18 points and Lucas Martin-Julien added 12 points for Xavier. Xavier shot 48.2% (26-54) overall and 16.7% (1-6) in 3-point attempts.

The Badgers (2-13, 1-4 SSAC West) will host the University of Mobile Rams (7-7, 2-3 SSAC West) on Thursday in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center at 7:30 p.m.
