PULASKI, Tenn. – The Spring Hill College men's basketball team fell to the 24th-ranked Martin Methodist College RedHawks in a 71-67 outcome in a Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) game on Saturday evening at the Robert E. Curry Christian Life Center.
The RedHawks (13-6, 8-3 SSAC West) held as much as 13-point lead midway through the 1st half, but owned just a slim 38-34 advantage at halftime.
A layup by senior guard Ty McCants put the Badgers up 48-46 with 10 minutes to play, but D'Angelo Tucker's 3-pointer at the 8:12 mark re-established a 50-48 lead for the RedHawks that they would not relinquish for the rest of the way. A 12-3 run by Martin Methodist over the next six minutes proved to be the downfall of the Badgers despite cutting the lead down to 62-56 off a McCants 3-pointer with just over a minute remaining in the game.
Junior forward Frederick Gatson scored 15 points to lead the Badger charge for the second consecutive outing as McCants totaled 11 points and Jarrett Calhoun contributed 10 more points to the Badger cause. Gatson also pulled down 11 rebounds for his third double-double game of the year.
For the game, SHC shot 42.2% (27-64) from the floor including 28% (7-25) from 3-point distance. The Badgers lost the battle for the boards in a 35 to 37 margin in rebounding and committed 13 turnovers to eight steals by the RedHawks.
MMC was led by Reginald Porter with 16 points and 10 rebounds as four RedHawks cracked the double digit scoring plateau. The RedHawks shot 41.5% (22-53) from the floor and 44.4% (8-18) in 3-point attempts. Martin Methodist lost 13 turnovers with the Badgers taking away five of them with steals.
The Badgers (4-17, 3-8 SSAC West) will next host the Blue Mountain College Toppers (6-15, 1-10 SSAC West) on Thursday at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center beginning at 7:30 p.m.
