The 2nd-ranked Spring Hill College softball team opened the 2014 season with a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Huntingdon College at Murray Field on Friday afternoon. The Badgers won the first game 2-1 in 9 innings while sophomore Sarah Bolotte threw her first career no-hitter in a 4-0 decision.

The Hawks (0-2) and the Badgers were scoreless after the first 7 innings of Game 1, but Huntingdon took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 8th inning when a throw to 3rd base by SHC shortstop Shea Blanchard missed the mark and allowed Brooke Meadows to scamper home. Spring Hill tied the game in the bottom of the frame when Blanchard lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield that plated Lena Land from 3rd base.

Sophomore catcher Sam Leach won the game for the Badgers with one out in the 9th inning when her infield single to the 1st base side brought in junior Lea Kittrell.

Caroline Sagrera (1-0) was the winner in a complete game, picking up where she left off in 2013 by collecting 16 strikeouts and allowing just four hits with one walk.

Pitcher Sarah Bolotte (1-0) was the story of the nightcap by going the distance with no hits, two walks, two hit batters and two strikeouts in 70 pitches. The Badger offense set Bolotte up with a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning highlighted by an RBI-single threw the infield by Leach. Leach added another RBI with a sacrifice fly in the 5th inning and Kittrell smacked a run-scoring double to center in the 6th inning.

Blanchard, Kittrell and Leach each enjoyed three-hit days while junior Elise deBruler had two hits with two stolen bases and sophomore Taylor Lahasky also collected two hits for the Badgers.

Jenna Rimensnyder and Heather McGuirk each had a double for the Hawks in the first game. Meadows (0-1) took the loss in relief in Game 1 with 2.1 innings of work, two hits, no walks and two strikeouts. Katy Messick went six innings in the start with three hits, a walk and two strikeouts. Anna Stephens (0-1) lasted four innings in the 2nd game with five hits, two walks and a strikeout.

Spring Hill (2-0) will next play at the University of West Florida (1-4) in a non-conference doubleheader in Pensacola, Fla., at the UWF Softball Complex on Thursday, February 20, beginning at 4 p.m.
