The Spring Hill College men's basketball team fell to the University of Mobile Rams 66-62 at Pharr Gymnasium on Saturday night.
The Badgers jumped out to a 17-9 lead over the Rams (12-10, 7-6 SSAC West), but Mobile roared back to tie the game at 21-21. SHC then launched a 7-0 run of its own to take a 28-31 lead with 3:20 left in the period.
Spring Hill carried a 37-28 advantage into halftime, but UMobile rallied again to cut it down to a 42-41 SHC lead.
Mobile led 60-55 with five minutes remaining after heating up from 3-point distance and maintained a 62-58 lead with 1:40 left on the clock. Robert Drummond brought the Badgers to within two points at 60-62 with two free throws, but Mobile made 1-of-2 on the other end to put Spring Hill down 63-60 with 25 seconds on the clock. An Alex Looney layup made it 63-62, but Mobile converted on two free throws at 12.8 seconds to rebuild a 65-62 advantage.
Badger guard Robert Gipson would miss a final 3-point attempt and Mobile would make 1-of-2 free throws with 1.2 seconds left to secure the victory.
Drummond led the Badgers with 13 points while Jarrett Calhoun added 10 points for Spring Hill. For the game, SHC shot 47.9% (23-48) from the floor including 26.1% (6-23) from 3-point distance. The Badgers were out-rebounded 34-25 and committed 10 turnovers versus three steals by the Rams.
UMobile was led by Chris Richardson with 16 points and Julien Sargent with 11 points The Rams shot 42.4% (25-59) from the floor and 38.1% (8-21) in 3-point attempts. Mobile lost nine turnovers as the Badgers took away three steals.
The Badgers (5-18, 4-9 SSAC West) next travel to Jackson, Miss., on Thursday for a conference game against the Belhaven University Blazers (11-11, 9-5 SSAC West) beginning at 7:30 p.m.
