JACKSON, Miss. – The Spring Hill College women's basketball team fell to the Belhaven University Lady Blazers 70-50 in a Southern States Athletic Conference game at Rugg Arena on Thursday evening.
The Lady Blazers (12-13, 6-9 SSAC West) bolted out to a 20-9 lead just nine minutes into the contest, but Spring Hill responded to cut the deficit down to 22-15 off an offensive rebound and put-back by freshman forward Camry Johnson at the 5:38 mark. Belhaven then used a 10-1 run over the final five minutes of the half to double up the Badgers 32-16 at the intermission.
Belhaven turned on the jets and expanded their margin to 45-25 five minutes into the 2nd half and led 62-35 with eight minutes remaining. SHC whittled the bulge down to 19 points with six minutes to play, but the Lady Blazers rebuilt 65-43 lead just two minutes later.
Senior forward Sha Sha Buchanan led Spring Hill with 10 points as SHC shot 30.4% (21-69) overall from the floor and 14.3% (3-21) from 3-point distance. The Badgers turned the ball over 20 times against six steals by Belhaven and were out-rebounded by the Lady Blazers 48-41.
Belhaven was led by Ariel Wilson with 16 points and TaShayla Steede with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Erika LeFlore hauled in 14 rebounds while Belhaven shot 40.9% (27-66) from the field including 50% (3-6) from behind the arc. The Lady Blazers committed 20 turnovers against nine steals by Spring Hill.
The Badgers (5-18, 2-13 SSAC West) will next host the 18th-ranked Bethel University Lady Wildcats (18-7, 11-4 SSAC West) on Saturday in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center beginning at 2 p.m.
