JACKSON, Miss. – The Spring Hill College men's basketball team lost to the Belhaven University Blazers 73-53 in a Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) game at Rugg Arena on Thursday night.
SHC jumped out to a quick 9-2 advantage over the Blazers (12-11, 10-5 SSAC West), but Belhaven rallied to knot the score at 19 each. Robert Gipson knocked down a 3-point bucket to put the Badgers up 22-19 with six minutes left in the half.
Datodrick Pinkston gave Belhaven its first lead of the game at 29-28 off a 3-pointer at 3:56 and the Blazers would carry a 35-30 lead into the halftime locker rooms.
Belhaven came out of halftime with hot hands and built a 12-point lead at 44-32 eight minutes into the 2nd half and the Badger deficit ballooned to 21-points at 63-42 with seven minutes left to play.
Frederick Gatson led the Badgers with 13 points while senior forward Alex Looney collected 10 rebounds. For the game, SHC shot 36.2% (21-58) from the floor including 17.6% (3-17) from 3-point distance. The Badgers out-rebounded the Blazers by a 43-34 margin, but committed 23 turnovers versus 14 steals by the Blazers.
Belhaven was led by Pinkston and Chris Cofield with 14 points each as five Blazers reached the double-digit scoring mark. The Blazers shot 41.8% (23-55) from the floor and 27.3% (6-22) in 3-point attempts. Belhaven lost 14 turnovers to six Badger steals.
The Badgers (5-19, 4-10 SSAC West) next host SSAC newcomers the Bethel University Wildcats (17-8, 8-6 SSAC West) on Saturday beginning at 4 p.m.
