The Spring Hill College baseball team earned a 4-3 extra-innings win over the NAIA's No. 1 ranked Faulkner University Eagles in the first game of a conference doubleheader and then fell 4-2 in a hard-fought nightcap at historic Stan Galle Field.

Faulkner (19-5, 7-2 SSAC)  took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning of the opening game off a successful sacrifice squeeze bunt by centerfielder Chris Madera, but the Badgers answered back in the 4th inning when designated hitter Taylor Eads ripped an RBI single up the middle of the diamond to score left fielder Mykol Sostarich from 2nd base.

A sacrifice fly to centerfield by pinch hitter Randy Joung of the Eagles made it 2-1 in the 6th inning, but Eads crushed a homerun that landed directly on top of the left-center outfield fence for a two-run home run in the bottom of the frame to stake SHC to a 3-2 lead. Catcher Robert Llera for Faulkner then tied the ballgame at 3-3 in the top of 7th inning with a run-scoring double into the corner of right field, but the Badgers loaded the bases with no outs in the 9th inning off singles by second baeman Brian Sims and Eads that were followed by a balk and an intentional walk to first baseman Kyle Freeman. Catcher Roy Moulder provided the heroics by driving a single through the right side of the infield for the walk-off win.

Keller Douglas (3-0) picked up the win in relief with three innings of work, four hits, a walk and three strikeouts. Badger starter Paul Sullivan went six good innings with three hits, five walks and three strikeouts.

For Faulkner, Brad Griffis (0-1) took the loss in two innings of relief for starter Jeremy Holcombe who worked six innings with three hits, two walks and four strikeouts.

In the second game, Faulkner scored single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings off an RBI double by first baseman Elvis Rodriguez and a run-scoring single by left fielder Esteban Paula. Spring Hill rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the 3rd inning with a solo home run out of left field by Sostarich and a double to right-center by Eads that brought Sims around from 1st base. Rodriguez provided the big hit of the contest for Faulkner in the 6th inning by mashing a two-run home run out of left.

Jack Howard fell to 3-1 on the year in the loss with six innings of work, five hits, three walks and three strikeouts while Patrick McGrady (4-0) came in for the Faulkner win in just two innings with a hit, no walks and two strikeouts. Kurt Lipscomb earned his second save of 2014 by closing the final two innings and limiting SHC to one hit and a walk with no strikeouts.

At the plate, Eads was 4-for-8 with four RBI for SHC while Sims had three hits and two runs scored. Sostarich collected two hits and scored three times on the day as right fielder Garrett Webb picked up two safeties in the second game. For the Eagles, designated hitter Sergio Sanchez had three hits including a double and Paula had two hits with three stolen bases and an RBI.

Spring Hill (16-8, 7-5 SSAC) will host Lyon College (8-10) in a two game non-conference series at historic Stan Galle Field on Tuesday and Wednesday with both games scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
