GULF SHORES, Ala. – The 2nd-ranked Spring Hill College softball team took home two wins at the 2014 Gulf Coast Invitational with a 3-1 score over the Morningside College (Iowa) Mustangs (0-3) and a 4-0 victory versus the William Penn University (Iowa) Statesmen (6-4).
Junior shortstop Shea Blanchard led off the game versus the MC Mustangs with homerun as she collected two of the Badgers eight hits in the contest. Freshman third baseman Lea Kittrell enjoyed a 3-for-3 game with a double. Sophomore pitcher Caroline Sagrera (6-1) allowed just three hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts.
In the game with William Penn, Sagrera gave up just one hit for her second shutout of the season with 11 strikeouts. All the runs she would need from the Badger offense came in the 6th inning when Blanchard led off with a single and later scored on a throwing error of a sacrifice bunt by left fielder Jenna Charnock. Charnock would score when sophomore catcher Sam Leach blasted a triple to the wall. Leach would trot home following another infield error by the Statesmen. Lena Land closed out the Badger scoring with an RBI-single that brought around junior first baseman Elise deBruler who had reached base on a walk.
On Sunday, Spring Hill (9-3) will begin play in the Bracket Play Round at a time and against an opponent yet to be determined.
