GULF SHORES, Ala. – The 2nd-ranked Spring Hill College softball team won the Gold Bracket Championship of the 2014 Gulf Coast Invitational with a 7-0 decision over Central Methodist University on Sunday afternoon.
The Badger offense belted out 13 total hits as sophomore starter Caroline Sagrera (7-1) limited the 23rd-ranked Eagles (10-4) to just two hits with a walk and 11 strikeouts.
Spring Hill led 2-0 after the 1st inning when senior second baseman Raleigh Downs drove in junior shortstop Shea Blanchard with a double and then scored off a single to centerfield by sophomore catcher Sam Leach. The Badgers added two more in the 2nd frame when Downs brought in junior centerfielder Taylor Webre with a single and sophomore right fielder Taylor Lahasky came home on an Eagle error.
Two more runs came home for SHC with two outs in the 4th inning when junior 1st baseman Elise deBruler drove in Downs and junior third baseman Lea Kittrell plated Leach with a rip into center. Downs continued her hot streak with an RBI-single to bring around Lahasky.
Downs finished the game with a perfect 4-for-4 performance with two runs scored and three RBI. Leach tallied three hits while Kittrell and Blanchard each had a pair of hits.
Spring Hill (12-3, 2-0 SSAC West) will host the Bethel University (Tenn.) Wildcats (4-8, 1-1 SSAC West) in a conference doubleheader on Wednesday at noon on Murray Field.
