HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The 2nd-ranked Spring Hill College softball team defeated Alcorn State University in a five-inning 9-1 outcome and also cruised past Mississippi Valley State University 13-1 in 5 innings during the opening day of the William Carey University Invitational at Joseph and Nancy Fail Field.
Against the Alcorn State Braves (2-9), SHC got triples from 3rd baseman Lea Kittrell and centerfielder Taylor Webre in the 2nd inning for a quick 2-0 lead then slammed the door with a five-run 3rd inning before tacking on two more runs in the 4th frame.
ASU leadoff hitter Alexandra Harris touched Caroline Sagrera for a two-out home run in the 3rd inning, but the Badger starter otherwise cruised along allowing just three hits and three walks with nine strikeouts.
The Mississippi Valley State Devilettes (2-20) scored an unearned run via two Badger errors in the top of the 1st inning, but SHC answered back with two runs in the 2nd inning and erupted for 11 runs in the 3rd frame.
Sagrera (12-1) allowed just one hit with a walk and seven strikeouts in four innings while Elise deBruler finished the final inning of play with a hit, two walks and a strikeout.
At the plate, right fielder Taylor Lahasky pounded out four hits with five RBI on the day including two doubles. Kittrell contributed three hits and three RBI while designated player Lena Land added two hits with three RBI. Left fielder Jenna Charnock hit safely three times with a run-driven as Webre tallied two hits with four RBI.
Spring Hill (16-3) will remain in Hattiesburg on Saturday to face the Georgia Gwinnett College Grizzlies (15-4) at 11:30 a.m. and the LSU-Alexandria Generals (21-3) at 1:30 p.m.
