HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The 2nd-ranked Spring Hill College softball team took a 7-2 victory over the Gwinnett College Grizzlies (15-5) in the morning session and then suffered a 1-0 loss to the LSU-Alexandria Generals (22-3) in the final day of the William Carey Invitational at Fail Field.
In the match with the Grizzles, the Badgers used a three-run 2nd inning highlighted by an RBI-double to left-centerfield by shortstop Shea Blanchard. Another four-run outburst in the 5th inning built out a 7-0 lead for the Badgers as Blanchard added a triple and an RBI to her totals in the frame.
Georgia Gwinett connected for a two-run home run off SHC reliever Sarah Bolotte in the 6th inning, but Badger starter Caroline Sagrera improved to 13-1 on the year allowing just two hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts.
Blanchard finished with three hits and two RBI in the game while left fielder Jenna Charnock also contributed three hits.
Spring Hill fell behind the Generals 1-0 in the 3rd inning of the second game when Sagrera (13-2) gave up a two-out run-scoring single to Julinn Torres. Sagrera took the complete-game loss with five hits allowed, a walk and nine strikeouts.
Logan Hebert of LSUA threw a one-hitter allowing just a single to SHC catcher Sam Leach in the 4th inning along with two walks and four strikeouts.
Spring Hill (17-4, 4-0 SSAC West) will next travel to Montgomery to face the Faulkner University Lady Eagles (9-8, 1-1 SSAC West) in a 3 p.m. divisional doubleheader on Tuesday.
