MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) announced on Monday afternoon that Spring Hill College swept the conference's weekly baseball awards as Taylor Eads won the Player of the Week and Jack Howard earned the Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of March 24-30, 2014.
A junior right fielder from Slidell, La., Eads went 6-for-8 versus 8th-ranked Belhaven University and crushed a game-winning two-run home run out of left field in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. Eads is hitting .390 on the year with a slugging percentage of .743 and a .496 on-base percentage. He has smacked nine homers, six doubles and two triples with 35 RBI. Nationally, he ranks Number 3 in the NAIA in Home Runs (9), Number 12 in Total Bases (78), Number 12 in Slugging Percentage (0.743), Number 20 in Total Bases per Game (2.364), and Number 25 in Runs Batted In per Game (1.061).
Howard, a 6-foot-4 right-handed junior from Decatur, Ga., scattered four hits over seven innings in a complete-game 4-1 victory over the Blazers on Saturday. For the year, he holds a 5-2 record with a 3.04 ERA in 53.1 innings pitched. Howard has struck out 35 opposing batters with 26 walks while holding opponents to a .241 batting average.
Spring Hill (22-16, 11-7 SSAC) will open a two-week road swing at the University of Mobile (25-10) in a non-conference game at Mike Jacobs Field on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
