The Spring Hill College men's golf team finished with in 3rd place out of five teams at the annual Badger Invitational held at Spring Hill Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday.
The Badgers came up just one stroke behind Union University (Tenn.) that eventually won the team title in a two-hole playoff over Faulkner State Community College. Spring Hill shot a combined team score of 592 (287, 305, +16) over the par-72, 6665-yard course, finishing just short of Union (299, 292, 591, +15) and FSCC (298, 293).
Junior Jordan Portal (67, 78, 145, +1) of Miami, Fla., placed second individually and freshman Wesley Hunter (71, 75, 146, +2) from St. Luke's Episcopal School in Mobile tied for 3rd place out of 36 competitors. Union's Bryce Doughty (74, 69, 143, -1) took the individual championship.
Sheldon Statkewicz tied for 7th position with rounds of 70 and 78 (148, +4). Freshman Grant Luisi from Dallas, Texas, shot a +10 score of 154 (79, 75) for 22nd place and senior Philip Dugan of Lake Forest, Ill., shot a +14 card of 158 (81, 77).
Senior Spencer Lane of St. Louis, Mo., came in at 12th place with a +9 score of 151 (77, 74) while senior Rickie Lee Jr of Bayou LaBatre, Ala., wrote scores of 77 and 76 on his card for a +11 total of 153. Freshman Jake Finn (73, 84) from Prattville, Ala., tied at 25th place with sophomore Cade Landeche (77, 80) of Luling, La., with +13 totals of 157 strokes (81, 80, +17). Sophomore Gerry Portela of Miami, Fla., rounded out the Badger participants in 28th place with scores of 81 and 79 for a +16 total of 160.
Spring Hill will next compete at the 2014 Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Championship Tournament at Lagoon Park Golf Course in Montgomery on April 13-16.
