HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Spring Hill College softball team split results in a conference doubleheader versus the 6th-ranked William Carey University Lady Crusaders with a 6-1 win and a 7-6 loss on Tuesday evening at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field.

Spring Hill broke out on top in the top of the 1st inning of the opening game when catcher Sam Leach drove a two-run double down the left line with one out that was followed by a two-run single over the top of the 3rd base bag by first baseman Elise deBruler. Two more run-scoring Badger singles just over the gloves of the Carey infielders made it 6-0 before the Crusaders took their first at bat of the game.

Badger starter Caroline Sagrera (24-6) scattered three hits with six walks and 11 strikeouts in the win while Brittany LeBlanc (16-3) of William Carey lasted just 2/3 of an inning with seven hits, two walks and a strikeout.

William Carey (32-4, 15-3 SSAC) took a 2-0 lead off Sagrera in the 1st inning of the nightcap with a one-out double followed by a single to left-center and an infield error.

A successful delayed double steal by the Badgers in the 3rd inning made it a 2-1 contest as SHC centerfielder Taylor Webre scored from 3rd base.

Three hits and a Badger infield error led to four runs by the Lady Crusaders in the 6th inning and pushed the score out to 6-1, but a two-out Grand Slam by right fielder Taylor Lahasky to left-centerfield tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the 7th inning.

The Crusaders put runners at the corners with one out in the bottom the 8th inning when Caroline Walker slapped a hard-hit one hopper that Sagrera stabbed out of the air on her right side, but then threw wide to home plate allowing centerfielder Relanda McFarland to score the winning run from 3rd base.

Sagrera surrendered a season-high 10 hits in 7.1 innings with two walks and 10 strikeouts while Brooklyn Guillot (1-0) picked up the win for Carey in one relief inning for starter Brittany Lang who went seven innings with nine hits, five walks and three strikeouts.

Spring Hill's offense on the day was led by third baseman Lea Kittrell with four hits and an RBI, Lahasky with three hits and four RBI, and Leach with three hits. Webre added two more hits to the Badger totals as did left fielder Jenna Charnock.

Carey was paced by McFarland with four hits and an RBI, shortstop Caroline Walker with two safeties and a run driven in, and third baseman Jasmine Shelby with two hits.

The 11th-ranked Badgers (28-9, 13-5 SSAC) will next travel to McKenzie, Tenn., on Friday for a 2 p.m. SSAC doubleheader with the Lady Wildcats (15-23, 4-16 SSAC) of Bethel University.
