MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Spring Hill College men's golf team finished with in 7th place out of 13 teams at the 2014 Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Championships held at Lagoon Park Golf Course on Monday through Wednesday.
The Badgers wound up 40 strokes behind Tournament Champion Faulkner University (287, 298, 288, 873 +9) with a three-day combined score of 913 (295, 316, 302, +49) over the par 72 course.
Freshman Wesley Hunter (72, 77, 73, 222, +6) from St. Luke's Episcopal School in Mobile tied with teammate Sheldon Statkewicz (72, 76, 74) for 12th place out of 65 individual competitors. Dylan Freeman of the College of Coastal Georgia shot a 2-under-par 214 (72, 70, 72) to win the event's individual title.
Junior Jordan Portal (75, 80, 75, 230, +14) of Miami, Fla., placed 28th while freshman Grant Luisi from Dallas, Texas, carded a +23 score of 239 (76, 83, 80) for 47th place. Senior Spencer Lane of St. Louis, Mo., rounded out the Badger participants in 62nd place with a score of 252 (81, 86, 85, +36).
Following the tournament, senior Rickie Lee Jr of Bayou LaBatre, Ala., and sophomore Cade Landeche of Luling, La., were name to 2014 SSAC All-Academic Team for their performances in the classroom. Portal was also named as the SHC representative on the 2014 Musco Lighting-SSAC Champions of Character Team.
The tournament was also the final men's golf event in the SSAC and the NAIA as the school will begin competition in NCAA Division 2 and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) this fall.
