McKENZIE, Tenn. – The 11th-ranked Spring Hill College softball team earned two conference wins with a doubleheader sweep of the Bethel University Lady Wildcats on Friday afternoon by the scores of 4-2 and 2-1.
SHC starter Caroline Sagrera (25-5) took home the victories in both contests allowing just seven hits with four walks and 21 strikeouts.
The Badgers scored two runs in the 2nd inning of the first game when first baseman Elise deBruler and centerfielder Taylor Webre connected on back-to-back RBI-singles. Spring Hill broke the game open in the 5th inning with a run-scoring single through the left side by shortstop Shea Blanchard and designated player Lena Land alerting scampering home from 3rd base off a passed ball.
Bethel (15-27, 4-18 SSAC West) picked up a two-run double in the 7th inning by Brooklyn Jenkins, but was otherwise held in check by Sagrera for most of the game.
The Badgers used a two-run rally in the 7th inning of the nightcap highlighted by a game-tying sacrifice fly by Webre that plated right fielder Taylor Lahasky and left fielder Jenna Charnock's two-out single to right field that scored Land with what proved to be the game-winning run.
Spring Hill (30-9, 15-5 SSAC West) next visits Blue Mountain, Miss., on Saturday for a conference doubleheader with the Blue Mountain College Lady Toppers (21-20, 9-15 SSAC West) beginning at 12 p.m.
