GULF SHORES, Ala. – The 7th-ranked Spring Hill College softball team opened the 2014 Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Championship Tournament with a 7-0 victory over the Blue Mountain College Lady Toppers on Thursday night at the Gulf Shores SportsPlex.
The Badgers broke on top of a scoreless game in the bottom of the 5th inning when pinch runner Lena Land scored from 2nd base after left fielder Jenna Charnock's sacrifice bunt attempt was thrown away at 1st base by the Topper infield. Third baseman Lea Kittrell followed with an RBI-single through the left side of the infield to make it a 2-0 game and shortstop Shea Blanchard smoked a ball into left field to score Charnock.
Catcher Sam Leach made it a 4-0 Badger advantage with a run-scoring single then second baseman Raleigh Downs cleared the bases with a three-run double to the wall in left-center.
SHC starter Caroline Sagrera (33-8) held a no hitter through five innings until getting touched for two hits in the 6th frame. Sagrera went the distance for her 16th shutout of the year with three hits allowed, three walks and 12 strikeouts.
Jessalyn Brown (7-6) of Blue Mountain (23-24) took the loss in 4.1 innings with six hits, a walk and a strikeout.
Spring Hill (37-11) will next face the 15th-ranked Belhaven University Lady Blazers (39-13) at 2 p.m. on Friday.
