GULF SHORES, Ala. – The 7th-ranked Spring Hill College softball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the 6th inning to win a 3-2 decision over 15th-ranked Belhaven University Lady Blazers at the 2014 Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Championship Tournament on Friday afternoon at the Gulf Shores SportsPlex.
SHC starter Caroline Sagrera (34-8) held Belhaven (39-14) scoreless through four innings until Blazer right fielder Jessica Paris lifted a two-run homerun out of left field in the 5th frame.
In the 6th inning, Badger catcher Sam Leach and designated player Mary Beth Glass blasted back-to-back solo dingers out of left field to tie the game. Shortstop Shea Blanchard then ended the game in the bottom of the 7th inning with a sacrifice fly that plated pinch runner Lena Land who was running the bases in place of first baseman Elise deBruler who had led off the frame with a single over the bag at third.
Sagrera, allowed four hits with three walks and six strikeouts while Ginger Lonergan of Belhaven took the complete-game loss with five hits, three walks and five strikeouts.
Spring Hill (38-11) will next challenge the 11th-ranked William Carey University Lady Crusaders (42-8) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
