GULF SHORES, Ala. – The 7th-ranked Spring Hill College softball team took a 5-1 victory over the 11th-ranked William Carey University Lady Crusaders at the 2014 Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Championship Tournament on Friday night at the Gulf Shores SportsPlex.

The Badgers took a 1-0 lead over the Lady Crusaders (42-9) when shortstop Shea Blanchard singled to center with one out to bring in left fielder Jenna Charnock from 2nd base with a slide around the catcher's tag. Carey third baseman Jasmine Shelby tied the game in the top of the 6th inning with a run-scoring single up the middle.

Spring Hill loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the 6th inning when a chopper to shortstop drew a throw that pulled the catcher off the plate to score the go ahead run for the Badgers and designated player Mary Beth Glass followed with a sacrifice fly to left to score a sliding third baseman Lea Kittrell.

Second baseman Raleigh Downs put a single into left-center to score two more runs as Spring Hill built a 5-1 lead with three outs remaining in the game for Carey.

SHC starter Caroline Sagrera (35-8) allowed eight hits, but gave up no walks and struck out six batters while Brittany Lang surrendered seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
