GULF SHORES, Ala. – The 7th-ranked Spring Hill College softball team took a 5-1 victory over the 11th-ranked William Carey University Lady Crusaders at the 2014 Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Championship Tournament on Friday night at the Gulf Shores SportsPlex.
The Badgers took a 1-0 lead over the Lady Crusaders (42-9) when shortstop Shea Blanchard singled to center with one out to bring in left fielder Jenna Charnock from 2nd base with a slide around the catcher's tag. Carey third baseman Jasmine Shelby tied the game in the top of the 6th inning with a run-scoring single up the middle.
Spring Hill loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the 6th inning when a chopper to shortstop drew a throw that pulled the catcher off the plate to score the go ahead run for the Badgers and designated player Mary Beth Glass followed with a sacrifice fly to left to score a sliding third baseman Lea Kittrell.
Second baseman Raleigh Downs put a single into left-center to score two more runs as Spring Hill built a 5-1 lead with three outs remaining in the game for Carey.
SHC starter Caroline Sagrera (35-8) allowed eight hits, but gave up no walks and struck out six batters while Brittany Lang surrendered seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Spring Hill (39-11) advances to the championship game on Saturday at 2 p.m. while Carey falls into the elimination bracket to face the winner AUM and Belhaven. With clinching the championship game appearance, SHC also secures an automatic bid to the 2014 NAIA National Championship Tournament.
