Team co-captain junior Sean Simpson of Ballwin, Mo., hammered home a free kick midway through the second half to lift the Spring Hill College men's soccer team to 3-2 victory over Thomas University on Sunday afternoon. The Badgers jumped out to a 2-nil halftime lead, but saw their lead diminish in the early stages of the second half. "It was a real physical battle on the pitch today," said Spring Hill Head Coach Adam Pearce, "and it was a real testament to how quickly our young team is maturing that they were able to hold on for the win."
Spring Hill scored its first goal of the day when junior co-captain Mike Reiter of St. Charles, Mo., accepted a crossing pass from the left side and put a beautifully placed header into the goal at the far post.
The second Badger goal came when freshman forward Patrick Hall of Mobile slid a dandy pass to sophomore forward Stanley Byrd of Moss Point, Miss., in front of the opposing goal keeper that Byrd was able to knock in for the score.
Thomas University, however, came out of halftime with an aggressive offensive plan and quickly tied the match at 2-2. ""I have deep respect for Thomas University," said Pearce, "They didn't give up and played a clean competitive game. It was the kind of game you enjoy playing."
The Badgers even up their season record at 2-2-1 with the win and next play Montevallo at home on Saturday, September, 22 at 4:30 p.m.
