The Spring Hill College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Lyon College in Memphis on Sunday evening. Spring Hill jumped out to 1-0 lead in the 11th minute of play when junior forward Zachariah Townsend and senior midfielder Sean Simpson used a skilled passing attack to knife the ball into freshman midfielder Gable Fortune who drilled the ball into the back of the net.
In the second half, however, the Badgers' youth began to show when Lyon College pulled back into the game with a tying goal in the 53rd minute. "Some of our younger players are still learning that mistakes get punished at this level," remarked Coach Adam Pearce. "We over-pushed and got caught overextended. This was a learning experience for us."
The Pipers' final goal came in the 75th minute versus sophomore goalie Dan Criscione of Maplewood, Mo., who took his first loss in goal of the year.
The Badgers (0-2-1) will return to Library Field at 6 p.m. on Friday versus Faulkner University in the opening day of the Second Annual Spring Hill Invitational.
