The Spring Hill College men's soccer team (3-3-1) defeated Birmingham-Southern (1-5) by the score of 3-1 at the Birmingham-Southern Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
The match was scoreless at the intermission as both teams' defenses played with energy and enthusiasm, but freshman forward Josh Ledet of Fairhope finally cracked the scoring column first with an unassisted goal for the Badgers in the 52nd minute.
Senior forward Sean Simpson from Ballwin, Mo., then lifted a lovely floating one-on-one shot over the head of Panther goalie Hal Halbert to expand the lead to 2-0 at the 56th minute.  Simpson poured in a second goal with an impressive shot to the upper right corner of the net off the inside of his right foot to build a 3-0 advantage in the 59th minute.
BSC ended the shutout bid with a goal by Joe Burrage of Picayune, Miss., in the 73rd minute.
Freshman goalkeeper William Gafford of Fairhope collected his third win of the season while facing 18 shots and making eight saves.  For the Panthers, Halbert faced 15 shots and made five saves.
