Sophomore Javier Portal of Miami, Fla., shot a 74 to led Spring Hill College into sixth place of 17 teams with a team score of 310 after the first round of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Fall Invitational at Windance Country Club.
Junior Will Loweth from Houston, Texas, was one shot behind Portal with a 75 followed by sophomores Eddie Smith of San Antonio, Texas with a 79 and Ricky Escobar of Miami at 82. Senior Dan Thouvenot of St. Louis, Mo., shot an 85.
In the afternoon's second round, Loweth anchored the Spring Hill Badgers with an even par 72. Loweth approached to the final hole of the afternoon with all pars and two birdies, but failed to pull off a bogey-free round when he double bogeyed eighteen. Escobar shot 77, Portal and Smith both fired 78 and Thouvenot shot 86 for a team total 305 for the second round.
The Badgers remain in Gulfport, Miss., on Tuesday for the event's third and final round beginning at 7:30 a.m.
