Spring Hill College cross country runner Kate Imwalle took home the 2008 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Women's Cross Country individual title at Choctaw Trails in Clinton, Miss., on Saturday morning.
Imwalle, a freshman from Mobile's McGill-Toolen Catholic High, finished the 5,000-meter course in a Spring Hill school-record time of 18:42.20. Her victory now qualifies her to compete in the NAIA National Championships on November 22 in Kenosha, Wis.
Following Imwalle, the top Lady Badgers finishers were sophomore Melanie Ferry (12th, 22:07.91) from Mobile's W.P. Davidson High, sophomore Maggie Meier (14th, 22:33.20) of St. Louis, senior Stephanie Hoffman (18th, 23:11.09) of Belleville, Ill., and sophomore Lynne Fritscher (20th, 23:27.82) of Covington, La.
Other SHC female finishers were freshman Ceci Venker (22nd, 23:34.29) of St. Louis, freshman Ashley Derenbecker (23rd, 23:58.97) of Bay St. Louis, Miss., freshman Emily Stewart (24th, 24:01.84) from Mt. Juliet, Tenn., and senior Gussie Altman (26th, 24:23.93) of Biloxi, Miss. A total of 33 runners competed as Spring Hill finished third in the women's team competition with a total of 65 points.
