Spring Hill College split a doubleheader with No. 16 Auburn-Montgomery on Tuesday night, taking the first game 6-0 and falling in the second game 8-0.
In the first game, Spring Hill starter Taylor Chadick (2-2) pitched a masterful game picking up a complete game shutout and allowing just four AUM hits and two walks with four strikeouts in a 6-0 victory.
The Badgers (5-11) drew first blood in the opening frame when designated hitter Jared Bonvillian of Baton Rouge, La., drove a three-run homer over the right field fence. SHC would add three more runs in the fourth inning with the big hit coming by right fielder Ryan Hall who doubled to left-center with two outs plating left fielder Sam Stewart and second baseman Tom Connors. Connors had two hits and an RBI in the first game and centerfielder Justin Harrison also added two hits and a run scored.
AUM (10-7) starter Allen Ponder took the loss allowing six earned runs off seven hits a walk and eight strikeouts. Centerfield Matt Arrighi recorded two hits for the Senators.
In the second game, AUM starter Briggs Bishop matched Chadick’s complete game shut out with one of his own. Bishop gave up just two hits and walked two batters and struck out two Badgers in the 8-0 win.
The Senators took a 2-0 lead in the first off a single by second baseman Cody Shields that scored shortstop Shane Moye and a misplayed grounder by Badger shortstop Patrick White that brought in Burch. Moye and Ponder both collected two hits in the second game and Burch tallied three RBI off a hit, a fielder’s choice and a hit-by-pitch.
Starter Chris Bruce (0-2) took the loss for SHC, giving up seven hits in 3.2 innings of work along with three earned runs, three walks, and three strikeouts. Harrison beat out an infield check-swing single and first baseman Javier Cherta dropped a double down the right field line in the seventh.
Spring Hill College next plays a three-game conference at Belhaven College beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. and continuing with a Saturday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
