Game at a glance
Spring Hill College dropped both halves of a doubleheader to conference foe Belhaven College (37-13, 22-10 GCAC) by the scores of 11-8 and 11-0 on Saturday at Stan Galle Field.
The first game saw the Badgers erupt for five runs in the fifth inning to grab a 5-3 lead off Blazer starter Chris Hartfield. In the frame, pinch hitter Jared Bonvillian crushed a two-run homer to left field followed just four batters later by first baseman Brad Holstein’s two-run shot over the leftfield fence.
The Blazers answered the challenge in the sixth inning by tying the game off a two- run double by left fielder Reg Ott. Spring Hill, however, sprang back into action in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run outburst led by run-scoring singles by Holstein and right fielder Ryan Hall.
In the seventh, Badger reliever Mario Garcia (2-4) surrendered four runs off three hits including a two-run homerun by pinch hitter Brian McCormick.
Riley Galloway (7-1) was the winner in relief while Kyle Medley picked up his ninth save of the year for Belhaven.
The second game was scoreless through four innings as Spring Hill starter Taylor Chadick (3-6) and Belhaven’s Kyle Buescher (4-1) both settled into early grooves, but it would be Chadick who blinked first, giving up a two-run homer to right to second baseman Blaise King in the fifth inning. The Blazers offense then opened the floodgates and scored five runs in the sixth inning to go with four more in the seventh.
Buescher pitched the complete-game victory allowing just four hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
Spring Hill College (18-31, 11-21 GCAC) wraps up the 2008 regular season at William Carey University in a rare four-game series this weekend beginning with a doubleheader at 3 p.m. on Friday and a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m. in Hattiesburg, Miss.
