Sims Gets 600th Win as Badgers Sweep BSC

Spring Hill College baseball swept a doubleheader from Birmingham-Southern College (2-2) by the scores of 10-0 and 7-5 on Sunday afternoon giving Frank Sims his 600th victory as head coach of the Badgers.

In the first game, Spring Hill College exploded for five runs in the first inning off BSC starter Drew Crofton (0-1).  Second baseman Tom Connors provided the big hit of the frame with a two-RBI single off reliever Anthony Bianchi that plated the fourth and fifth runs.

The Badgers would add an unearned run in the second inning when Panther right fielder Darby Wepper misplayed a fly ball off the bat of designated hitter Tyler Moberg that allowed Ryan Hall to scamper home from second base.  Three more runs in the fourth and a run scoring sacrifice fly by Hall in the fifth would end the game by the 10-run Mercy Rule at 10-0.

SHC starter Nick Clapper (2-0) picked up his second shutout victory of the young season going five complete innings and allowing just two hits, three walks and striking out six batters. 

The second game found the Badgers down 3-1 after three innings, but consecutive two-out hits in the fourth by right fielder Hall and center fielder Justin Harrison would tie the game at three.  Spring Hill errors by shortstop Blake Nelson and Connors would allow BSC to take a two-run lead in the fifth, but a dramatic three-RBI double by first baseman Javier Cherta in the sixth gave Spring Hill College a 7-5 advantage going into the final half inning of play.

Reliever Todd Kline (1-0) secured the first two outs off a strikeout and a ground ball to third, but Bianchi poked a single to right field and Mario Garica would come in to register his first save of the season with a foul pop fly out to Cherta.

The victory in Game 2 gave Frank Sims his 600th win as the Badger skipper.  He now stands at 600-592-3 at Spring Hill College and 644-602-3 overall.

SHC (4-5) plays Stillman College in a doubleheader on Tuesday at Stan Galle Field beginning at 3 p.m.
