The Spring Hill College softball team swept a doubleheader from No. 24 Martin Methodist College at Murray Field on Wednesday afternoon by the scores of 6-5 and 5-4 with both game going down to the final pitch.
In the first game, the Lady Badgers, down 4-0 early, took the lead off a four-run sixth inning with the final two runs coming off a bases-loaded, two-out bobbled grounder by Red Hawk shortstop Sakiko Tamashiro scoring SHC pitcher Samantha Brooks and catcher Brooke Turlich.
Turlich’s run would prove important because the Red Hawks would mount a two-out rally in the seventh that saw left fielder Nikki Osborne cut the lead to 5-4 with a run-scoring single. Red Hawk centerfielder Katie Murphy followed with a single to left that looked sure to score pinch runner Dakota Bowman from second base, but Lady Badger left fielder Lindsey Taylor threw a bullet into Turlich cutting down the tying run at the plate to end the game.
Brooks recorded the win and pitched 6.2 innings for SHC giving up five earned runs, a walk and one strikeout. Carlene Bolton picked up her first save of the year. Sally Gale went the distance for Martin Methodist (13-4) allowing three earned runs, two walks and two strikeouts.
In the second game, the Lady Badgers scored three runs in the first inning chasing MMC starter Amy Novakoski only two outs into the game. In the top of the seventh, the Lady Badgers held a 4-1 lead but gave up three tying runs to the Red Hawks. In the bottom of the seventh, SHC second baseman Brittany Abate drove a double to right-centerfield that brought shortstop Jessica Walters all the way home from first to win 5-4.
Samantha Brooks (3-1) got her second win of the day in relief, but starter Lauren Herrera went 6.1 innings with four earned runs, two walks and six strikeouts in her no-decision. Gale took both losses for Martin Methodist.
The Lady Badgers (6-4) travel to Jackson, Miss. this weekend to play in the Belhaven College Invitational beginning on Friday at 4 p.m. versus Oklahoma Christian.
