ONU Sweeps Softball Doubleheader

The Spring Hill College softball team lost a non-conference home doubleheader to Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) by the scores of 3-0 and 10-1 on Friday afternoon.

In the first game, ONU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning off SHC starter Samantha Brooks (8-6) when designated player Erin Meyerhoff drove a 2-RBI double into the right-center field gap.  Meyerhoff also drove in the third ONU run in the fifth inning with a single through the right side of the infield.

The Olivet starter, Lauren Chessum, enjoyed 14 strikeouts and surrendered just one walk with five Badger hits while picking up the complete game shutout victory.  Brooks went the distance for SHC allowing seven hits, a walk and striking out two Lady Tigers.

Olivet Nazarene (12-3) used another strong first inning in the second game, scoring three runs off Lady Badger Lauren Herrera (1-7).  ONU would score four more runs in the third inning off Herrera and then add three more runs in the fifth off her relief, Carlene Bolton.  Herrera allowed seven runs in 2.1 innings off four hits, three walks, three errors, and three strikeouts.

Kellie Koverman was the winner for ONU allowing one earned run off three hits, no walks and two strikeouts.  Rachelle Renfro had two hits and an RBI for the Lady Tigers while Rachel Comoglio added a triple and three RBI.  Brittany Abate had a hit and an RBI for the Lady Badgers.

The Lady Badgers (14-13) next play at Thomas University (Ga.) in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
