The Spring Hill College softball team split a pair of games at the University of West Florida Spring Fling on Tuesday afternoon.

In the first game, Evangel University (Mo.) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning off starter Lauren Herrera (1-3) and held on for a 6-4 victory over the Lady Badgers.  Herrera collected two hits at the plate, however, as did her teammates Lindsey Taylor and Kristen Knipe.  SHC out hit Evangel nine to eight, but could not overcome the early deficit.

In the second game, the Lady Badgers (4-4) defeated Martin Methodist (Tenn.) 3-2 in extra innings.  Starter Brittany Abate (2-0) went all eight innings and gave up just four hits and two earned runs.  Samantha Brooks had two hits and scored twice for the Lady Badgers who overcame an early first inning run with two runs of their own in the fourth.

The Lady Badgers won the game in the bottom of the eighth when Jessica Scallan’s single scored Abate from third.

The Lady Badgers play Martin Methodist again on Tuesday in a doubleheader at Spring Hill beginning at 1 p.m.
