The Spring Hill College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Warner Southern College (Fla.) on Monday afternoon winning the first game 4-3 in extra innings, but falling to the Royals 8-4 in the nightcap.
In the first game, SHC starter Samantha Brooks (9-6) pitched eight innings and allowed just five hits with five walks and three strikeouts. Carlene Bolton registered her third save of the year by closing the door in the ninth with two ground-ball outs and a strikeout.
At the plate, seniors Jessica Walters and Lauren Herrera both collected two hits for the Lady Badgers with Herrera scoring the winning run from second off a ninth inning double by second baseman Jessica Edgar.
The second game saw the Lady Badgers stumble to WSC (18-4) by an 8-4 score as sophomore Brittany Abate (5-2) gave up seven hits in five innings of work, but allowed just one earned run as early fielding errors came back to haunt Spring Hill. Abate also had a two-run single for the Lady Badgers.
The Lady Badgers (16-15) next play a non-conference doubleheader with West Virginia Technical Institute in Lake Wales, Fla., on Tuesday beginning at 10 a.m.
