Spring Hill College lost a hard-fought 3-1 volleyball decision to rival University of Mobile on Tuesday night at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center. “To get better you have to face adversity and learn to overcome it,” Spring Hill Head Coach Beth Ring said following the game, “Now we have to face this adversity and learn from our mistakes.”
The Lady Badgers took the first game by a healthy 30-22 score. A four-point run by the home squad established a 9-5 Spring Hill lead that was later complimented by a second four-point streak that opened a 27-18 disparity.
The second game went to the visitors in a 31-29 battle that featured long scoring runs by both teams. Mobile saw a 10-7 lead collapse following three consecutive serving aces by Spring Hill sophomore Melissa Williams of Fairhope that gave the Badgers an 11-10 lead. Mobile answered with an 8-2 run to 22-16, but Spring Hill followed up with a 9-2 run to take the advantage at 25-24. Mobile then outran the Lady Badgers to the finish and tied the match at 1-1.
In game three, Mobile found its rhythm and used runs of six and five points to win 30-21. “We didn’t make adjustments in the third game,” Ring said, “and we stopped doing what has been successful for us. Mobile made more adjustments than we did and that’s something we need to work on.”
Game four saw Mobile turn a 6-4 Spring Hill lead into a 10-6 Ram advantage off very strong serving that included three aces. Both teams were able to put together several three-point runs, but in the end Mobile’s strong net play prevailed 30-23.
Spring Hill (3-2, 1-1) now travels to Cleveland, Tenn., this weekend for the Lee University Invitational Tournament. Mobile moves to 5-2 on the year and 1-0 in the conference.
